Title: Garlic Bread/variations

  BREAD
1 Loaf country style bread, thin crisp crust - about 4 inches

GARLIC BUTTER 8 tb Unsalted butter, softened 2 tb Olive oil 1/2 ts Fresh lemon juice 1/4 ts Crushed red pepper flakes : OR to taste 1/4 ts Ground black pepper 1/2 ts Salt Or to taste 8 sm Garlic cloves, peeled and : - minced (or more to taste)

Cut the bread into 16 one inch slices.

Place butter in a nonreactive bowl add the olive oil, red pepper flakes, black pepper, lemon juice and salt. Cream butter mixture until well combined. Add the garlic and incorporate it into the butter mixture.

Spread both sides of each slice with the butter mixture.

Toast the slices of bread on both sides under a preheated broiler for about two minutes on each side, watching carefully to avoid burning the bread.

Alternatively, toast the buttered bread slices, arrange on a baking sheet, in a preheated 400 degree oven until a medium golden color (about 15 minutes) and turn the slices after about 7 minutes using a long pair of tongs.

OR divide a loaf into slices without cutting all the way through, fan out the slices slightly and spread the butter on all sides wrap the loaf in aluminum foil and bake in a preheated 400 degree oven for 12 minutes, carefully fold back the foil from the top and sides using oven proof mitts and bake for an additional 7 minutes or until crust is crisped.

Flavor Variations:

For Herbed Garlic Bread, sprinkle 4 tablespoons finely chopped fresh parsley leaves, or two tablespoons of finely chopped fresh thyme or oregano leaves over both sides of the buttered bread slices.

For Mixed Herb Bread, use 3 tablespoons chopped parsley leaves and 1/2 tablespoon each thyme and oregano.

For Olive Garlic Bread, sprinkle 1/3 cup minced oil cured black olives over both sides of the buttered bread pat down the lives on the butter.
